I could not believe it that I was here at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 100th anniversary of Food Nutrition Expo Conference in Chicago, Illinois. There were almost 13,000 registered dietitians and nutrition professionals there for this four-day celebration! There was also more than 130 educational sessions, panel discussions, research forums and culinary demonstrations. There was so much to see and do in only four days, but I was ready to get started now.
The first day of the conference was Opening Session and the Keynote speaker the famous neurosurgeon and Emmy Award-winning chief medical correspondent for CNN, Sanjay Gupta who discussed how media influence health and nutrition. Dr. Gupta also explained about dietitians and nutritional professional frustrations with negative media messages, and fake nutrition news on social media. Dr. Sanjay Gupta emphasis that we must show a positive spin of this by educating the public about the truths of food a...
Since 2017 is quickly coming to a close I had the best opportunity this past October in going to the Academy's Food and Nutrition Expo Conference 100th Anniversary in Chicago! I was so excited to go to Chicago which is the headquarters of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This year is my first year as Secretary of Dietitians Integrative and Functional Medicine Group (DIFM) so I was also excited to see our symposiums that we were having at the conference also!!
After 2 days of DIFM Executive Board Meetings and doing secretarial work, I had the chance one night with my fellow DIFM friends to go to this incredible restaurant called True Foods Kitchen run by the famous renowned physician, Dr. Andrew Weil. I have never heard of this place until we met with our wonderful waiter who explained the concept of the restaurant. All of the meals that were prepared there was seasonal, anti-Inflammatory, gluten-free, naturally organic, vegetarian and vegan offerin...
On Friday, December 1st, 2017 is World AIDS Day. AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is an immune system disorder in which the body's ability itself is greatly diminished (Sizer & Whitney 1997). People with AIDS frequently experience severe PEM ( Protein-Energy Malnutrition) and wasting which often begins early in the disease and becomes progressively worse (Sizer & Whitney 1997). AIDS clients early signs of deterioration are weight loss, reduced body fat, and low body mass index. Preventing and treating malnutrition and wasting should be a high priority in the care of AIDS-infected people. Adequate nutrition can help maintain body tissues and improve life's quality for AIDS client. Frequently AIDS clients suffer anorexia and may refuse food. They also may more readily accept small, frequent snacks than large meals (Sizer & Whitney 1997).

A pattern may emerge of eating to relieve boredom, guilt or tension or to please others. For some, food has always been a reward for good behavior. Others eat when they need to feel comforted.
Breaking the Pattern
